Monochromatic Home Decor

Many people know that by wearing all the same color you can appear slimmer and taller and extremely polished. Many people forget that they can do the same design to their living space to make it appear larger, tailored, and less chaotic. Monochromatic design does not have to be dull to be effective. Here are a few steps to creating a successful monochromatic look in your home:

Shades of Gray
Blacks, whites, and grays can be completely sheik. If you ever watch the Bravo TV reality show, "Flipping Out", that is exactly the color scheme the lead character uses in his own home, and he makes millions of dollars for his designs! One of the great things about this color scheme is that you can really save money by easily finding bargains. No matter if you are choosing tile or furniture or accessories, you can almost always find a version in black, white, or gray in the clearance section. Even the regular price on these colors is usually the cheapest option. Also, all hardware can stay in a standard chrome color and go beautifully. Silver/chrome is inevitable the cheapest color for every piece of hardware from doorknobs to faucets, and in this color scheme you aren't just settling for that finish but desiring it! Choose area rugs in these colors that are very interesting. This design style lends itself extremely well to allowing your area rug to be a major focal point as artwork beneath your feet.

Neutral Class
Staying with neutral shades is always a good bet. Browns and creams are gorgeous if done right. Spend extra time picking items with lots of details if you choose to use a completely neutral pallet. This will keep the space lively and keep it from looking dull or is if there was no effort put into the design. Beige doesn't have to be bland if the detailing is exquisite. Staying neutral will also help keep the price down as, just like with black and white, the colors you will need are easy to find and always in stock-often even on sale! Flooring for this design scheme should stay in the same color pallet typically, but if you want to add some color details, area rugs are a great place to start. Pick a rug in a bright accent color such as red and pollinate that color around the room in other small accessories such as throw pillows and prints.

Water World
Colors of water can be soothing and beautiful. Decorate an entire space in varying shades of blue to create an escape that is subdued and relaxing. Find beautiful blue area rugs in a pattern that reminds you of rippling waves or rain running down glass. Cover your furnishings in materials with a sheen that reflects and refracts light as water would. Utilize glass in your accessories to keep the space fluid and open. Be sure to accent with a shade of white or cream so that you don't spend extra on custom finishes for things like molding, switch covers, and ceiling fans.
